PERKONOMICS = perks and privileges

When time is scarce and consumers long for exclusive access, it's all about perks and privileges. The perks should be about status, convenience and/or saving time. Examples: Exclusive box seats for Fashion Week for American Express Platinum Card customers (status); or parking spaces close to the entrance of an IKEA store that are reserved for owners of hybrid vehicles (convenience, and a little bit of status, too); hiring an interior designer (status and saving time).

Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair

The much-hyped Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair gathered a lot of steam after its September 5th preview. Controversial curator Pierre Huber had put together more than 100 galleries from around the world. The fair, at the massive Shanghai Exhibition Center, proved that China represented a third of the galleries present, which outsold the rest. Price points ranged from Liu Wei's acclaimed landscape, at $450,000 to up-and-coming Qui Xin, priced just under $20,000. The other focal points included the large works of Yayoi Kusama, considered very hot property by art cognoscenti!

After the government's confiscation of the 8 Louis Vuitton tattooed pigs by Wim Deloye, citing cruelty against animals, the fair's Best of Discovery was the most discussed topic. Personally I liked Ai Weiwei's coal work and found that Ravikumar Kashi's work for a mere $1,500 seemed like a true bargain, given how delicately they were done.   Perhaps I should take this opportunity to insert what artist Rikrit Tiravanija suggested in his free rice snack: Rich Bastards Beware!"
