Winning in the Pick Economy

Many years ago my friend and colleague, Sid Goldberg with Kravet, challenged me to create the "pick me" sample book for fabrics. This book would be the one in a design firms library that yelled out "pick me" when a designer walked by. I thought the request humorous at the time and over the years, have considered the situation. I recently read an article in Advertising Age under CMO (Chief Marketing Officer) Strategy and have gleaned what I think is an answer for Sid!

Business Development is Showing up and Being Present

One never knows where the next opportunity will come from and now more than ever, it is important to reach out and remind people that you are relevant and someone to do business with. My recent trips have included time in New York to attend the annual Fete de Swifty’s, a fundraiser that was produced by DMC client Matthew David Events. The event was attended by many of New York’s industry leaders and old money. Some of my colleagues included Greg Furman of the Luxury Marketing Council, Andrew Kepler, Christel Dahlen, and Philip Gorrivan, interior designer extraordinaire.

I then went to London for the Focus show at the Design Centre at Chelsea Harbour, where I had the opportunity to do three speaking engagements to receptive design professionals. The market was very busy and incredibly well organized under the aegis of Helen Fifield and her team lead by Lisa Schneider. It was attended by the who’s who of the design industry including Jim Druckman of NYDC, Frank Leyon, Jim Caughman, and Marta Szwaya of Baker, Camilla Sorenson of Nanz (and THANK YOU for the coolest canvas tote!!!), David Calligeros of Remains, and textile powerhouse Cary Kravet. The wrap-up party was a Veuve Clicquot-filled evening with over 800 revelers!!! Well done!

I then segued to Sao Paulo to hang out with my buddies Vera Lopes and Paola Mansur of the Luxury Marketing Council and did a presentation on Luxury Marketing to a group of top business people including Joao Bazzon with the developer Iguatemi and Romeu Trussardi Neto with the elite Trousseau linens, and the lady who gives luxury writing its meaning, Regina Valadares.
